The Smurfs Movie Comes Out August 3, 2011

The Smurfs, an animated cartoon, ran throughout the 80’s and became one of pop cultures biggest fixtures. Today, these characters are being reinvented in more ways that one.

Not only are the Smurfs getting another shot at fame through Facebook profile pictures, but they are also due to be exploited in a feature length film out August 3, 2011.

The premise of the film goes like this:

Set in the Middle Ages, the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and his cat discover the Smurfs’ village and chase them into some woods. The Smurfs get scattered and Clumsy Smurf (voiced by Anton Yelchin) wanders into a “forbidden” grotto and some of the other Smurfs follow. But Papa Smurf just warns about the grotto, where all Smurfs should never go into this little cave. Since it’s also a blue moon, a magical portal within the grotto transports them into Central Park in New York. They take shelter with a married couple (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) and try to find a way back to their village before Gargamel finds them.

Check out the trailer for the upcoming film.

What do you think of the new film?
