Yoko Ono: Five things you did not know about her

One can only imagine (or perhaps can’t imagine) how painful Dec. 8 is for Yoko Ono each year. Though the whole world is celebrating the legacy of her late husband, John Lennon, it brings back the pain of his murder by Mark David Chapman, which happened 30 years ago today with the controversial Ono by his side. Why is she controversial? Some blame Sean Lennon’s mom and Julian Lennon’s stepmom for breaking up the Beatles. Here’s five things you may not have known about her:

1. She did not meet her father, who was working abroad when she was born, until age 2.

2. She was a victim of bullying as a child after her family’s fortunes took a bad turn and they were forced to beg for food.

3. Her father spent time in a concentration camp in China.

4. She spent time in a mental institution in Japan after attempting suicide.

5. She became estranged from her daughter from her second marriage, Kyoko, during the 1970s after her father took her to live in a Christian group called “Church of the Living Word.”
