Aretha Franklin is doing well after undergoing a mystery surgery on Thursday.

“The surgery was highly successful,” Franklin, 68, said in a statement. “God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country. God bless you all for your prayers!”

The mother of two underwent the procedure about 5 a.m. Thursday at a Detroit hospital.

No reason for the surgery has been revealed and her representatives have declined to disclose her illness.

But of course people are speculating what health issues the Queen of Soul had to undergo surgery.   It must have been  quite serious - in August of this year, Franklin had to cancel her dates with Condoleeza Rice on their joint tour after breaking two ribs in a fall.

In November, Franklin’s doctor ordered the ailing singer to not perform until May 2011 after she reportedly spent a week in Detroit’s Sinai-Grace Hospital for a ’serious illness’.

When I hear of a serious illness, right away I think of heart disease or cancer.

Let’s hope if that whatever major surgery she had was successful and she will be healthier than ever.
