‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ Grosses $61 Million on First Day

By WSJ Staff “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1″ pulled in $61.15 million on Friday, its first full day of release. That’s the fifth-biggest single day gross of all time, according to Hollywood.com, which released the figures. The top single-day movie gross record is held by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” which took in $72.7 million in 2009. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1″ is now on track to have the biggest box office weekend of any film in the series. The previous “Potter” high was set by the 2005 installment “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” which grossed $102.3 million in its first weekend.The Warner Bros. film has earned mostly positive reviews from critics, scoring a 78 percent approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes web site. With “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ set to be released in 3-D next year, there is likely even more box office glory in the franchise’s future.
